These are our absolute favorite cookies for the holidays. We make a quadruple batch for our annual Wreath Party, and at least a double or triple batch for Christmas itself.
Jump to RecipeThe cookies are easy to make, don’t really need to be chilled before baking. (Don’t come at me if you are an actual baker, and the correct method requires chilling. I never chill any more and they still come out perfect.) Kids love to pile them high with frost ing and sprinkles, and they always look festive and cute.

1 ½ c. powdered sugar
1 c. (2 sticks) butter
1 egg
1 ½ t. vanilla
1 t. baking soda
1 t. cream of tartar
2 ¾ c. flour
Directions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees.
- Cream together butter and powdered sugar.
- Add egg and vanilla and mix.
- Add baking soda and cream of tartar and mix slightly.
- Then add flour one cup at a time, mixing a little in between. Mix until dough starts to form a ball.
- Chill if desired, see note below.
- Divide dough in half and turn out onto a floured board
- Roll to about ¼ inch thick, cut with cookie cutters.
- Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake about 10 minutes – until just golden on the edges.
Notes
- The original recipe that I based this one on said to chill at least an hour or overnight. For me it made the dough too difficult to work with. IF I chill the dough at all it is for 15-20 minutes.
- Number of cookies (2-3 dozen) depends on the size of the cookie cutters used.
